The Shop on the Corner: Grab a drink and sit a spell on the front porch
Country stores were once the center of rural social and business life. Screen doors creaked as customers came and went to get provisions, do business, or just sit a spell and talk. Imagine staying in a place with the history and charm of once being a community treasure.
This place is no ordinary vacation rental. Its vibe is part of a thoughtfully renovated vacation house — part pool hall, part jail (seriously it has a jail), and overall, totally unique. The Old Brownsburg Store B&B, located in Historic Brownsburg, once a stagecoach stop between Staunton and Lexington, has been impeccably and lovingly modernized to provide all the comforts of home and necessities of travel while still holding onto the feeling that you’ve just walked into an episode of ‘The Andy Griffith Show’. And all those things the store used to be — a pool hall, an old lock-up, and a place of business — are all still there, only they’ve been reimagined as guest amenities. The pool table sits below a big TV for playing or watching a game. The basement jail (complete with bars still in place) has been converted into a sophisticated wine cellar with a charming antique floor and cozy fireplace in a room perfect for enjoying an evening brandy and good conversation.
The bedrooms await with luxurious bedding and linens. All new bathrooms are complete with dressing tables to prep for that night out or a special event. The large eat-in kitchen is light and airy with new appliances, is fully outfitted, and ready for sharing meals and stories about who got ‘locked up’ last night in the cellar. Outside, there is ample room to play, eat, sit by the firepit and watch the stars (which are amazing here) or relax on the porch and enjoy the rural rhythm of a small historic village. It’s the best of both worlds, part country, part community.
